Enabling a gold standard of care for all people nearing the end of life

GSF in Prisons

We are in the process of seeking examples of best practice and developing a workbook for GSF in Prisons. This work is under development - if you would like to join us, or you have some examples of good practice that you would like to share please contact the team.

The Department of Health End of Life Care Strategy gave examples of good practice, one of which included work in prisons for people nearing the end of life.

Lessons can be drawn from primary care - in particular identifying which inmates may be in the last year or so of life and holding team meetings with representatives from different areas. We can also learn from use of the GSF in care homes, with it's well established training programme and examples of good practice within organisations of all sizes, evidence of reducing un-necessary admissions and hospital deaths. Advance care planning with people at the end of life helps identify their wishes and concerns and enables us to provide the care which best suits them. Prisons clearly have their own challenges, but the principles of teamwork and good communication both within the team and with the patient are key.

GSF for Prisons is to be launched in the near future.
