There are currently a number of ways to use GSF online ADA tools. They can be used with care homes or with general practice, they can be used as a one off benchmark or before and after and intervention to show progress.
The charts outline the main usage of ADA so far. Other options include sequential ADA over an extended period. ADA is being adapted for acute hospitals and other settings. Please contact the team to discuss your specific needs.
GSF Primary Care Programme
| ADA type | Audit type | Current usage | Research evidence |
| PRIMARY CARE Comparative Audit with an improvement initiative | Online ADA completed for five or more patient deaths, before (baseline) and again after (follow-up) to show the benefits of an initiative such as a LES or the GSF Quality Improvement Training Programme. Results show progress made with targets, level of adoption of GSF and patient outcomes in end of life care. | Online version used Jan 07 to Feb 09 for all new registered practices with the GSF Primary Care programme. Over 300 practices have completed the online baseline audit since 2007. From October 2009 ADA will be used as part of the GSF Quality Development Pack before and after the practice based Training Programme to assess and support progress (see GSFPC Briefing Paper for more details) | Pilot paper version developed and used by practices before and after implementing GSF. Walsall tPCT funded GSF ADA Study 2006/07 from University of Birmingham - Clifford, Shaw, Badger report completed Feb2008. Papers to follow. All recommendations were implemented and online version of ADA PC developed. |
| PRIMARY CARE One off Benchmarking Audit | Benchmarking study to audit against national targets, level of GSF adoption and patient outcomes. Practices can be benchmarked against others within their PCT, SHA and nationally. | In 2009 the National Primary Care Audit using ADA Benchmarking across 15 PCTs means comparative data will now available at national and regional level. (Full reporting November 09) | Further evaluation of ADA online will take place during 2009. |
GSF Care Homes Programme
| ADA type | Audit type | Current usage | Research Evidence |
| CARE HOMES Comparative | Online ADA completed for five resident deaths, before implementation of GSFCH training (baseline) and nine months later (follow up). The comparative audit demonstrates progress made with level of adoption of GSFCH and patient outcomes in end of life care. | To date used only as part of the GSF Care Homes Training Programme. Since 2005 used in over 600 homes (paper or on-line versions) | GSFCH Programme Phase 2 study by University of Birmingham (Clifford et al) demonstrated 12% reduction in crisis admissions and 8% reduction in hospital deaths. Phase 3 data findings consistent with previous trends. Ongoing evaluation continues for each phase. |
| CARE HOMES Benchmarking | Benchmarking audit evaluates level of GSFCH adoption and key outcomes in end of life care, for five resident deaths. | Used as one of the four key factors in the national GSFCH accreditation process, Going for Gold. | Based on the above studies in GSFCH programme - further studies under way. |
